Black Elephant Vintners The Back Roads Petit Syrah 2017
Type: Red
Country: South Africa
Region: Franschoek Valley
Grape Variety: 100% Petite Sirah
Climate: Warm continental climate
Terroir: The grapes for The Back Roads Petite Sirah were selected from a single vineyard growing on decomposed table mountain sandstone on the slopes of Mount Matoppie in the Franschhoek Valley
Winemaking: The hand-picked grapes were fermented as a whole berry and 30% of the whole bunch. Fermentation at a maximum temperature of 28°C lasted 7-12 days. After fermentation was completed, it went into the traditional basket press, from which the wine was let directly into the barrel, where malolactic fermentation was completed. The wine then matured in previously occupied French barriques for 24 months and was bottled unfined and only lightly filtered after maturation was complete
Color: Deep purple
Nose: Nose of dark berries, black currants, and a hint of black pepper
Palate: The palate enjoys a bold and robust attack, as flavors of ripe plum, blueberry, and dark chocolate intertwine harmoniously. A mid-palate of velvety tannins and a touch of smoky oak adds depth to the wine. The finish is long-lasting and smooth, leaving a lasting impression of richness and complexity
