Snyman Wines Rock of Eye Chenin Blanc 2023
Type: White
Country: South Africa
Region: Swartland
Grape Variety: 100% Chenin Blanc
Climate: A Mediterranean climate defined by warm, dry summers and pronounced day–night temperature shifts, fostering even ripening, lifted aromatics, and fresh natural acidity.
Terroir: Decomposed granite and shale soils, providing good drainage and mineral tension. The rugged, low-vigour soils contribute to concentrated fruit and textural complexity.
Ageing: Fermented with native yeasts, matured in old French oak barrels (neutral wood) for subtle texture, without overt oak flavours. Aged on fine lees to build mouthfeel and depth.
Color: Pale straw with a slight golden hue
Nose: Aromas of quince, yellow apple, white peach, and hints of honeycomb, with subtle notes of chamomile and flinty minerality.
Palate: Vibrant and textural. Fresh stone fruit and citrus unfold over a core of bright acidity, layered with savoury minerality and a touch of waxy complexity. A long, precise finish with both freshness and depth.
About the Winery:
Rock of Eye is a South African wine brand founded by winemaker Coenie Snyman, inspired by the term “rock of eye” which describes the intuitive, instinct-driven precision of a skilled tailor. The viticultural philosophy centers on a deep understanding and partnership with the land and vineyards, selecting sites with decomposed granite soils and collaborating with growers to express the unique terroir of Stellenbosch. The winemaking process itself is guided by this same balance of experience and intuition, from vineyard management to the final bottle.
