Terroir: The wine is named after the vineyard “Le Balze”, which is located in Novayya di Marano di Valpolicella (Verona province). The vines grow on hills at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level on soils characterized by marl rocks interspersed with clay and limestone
Winemaking: Grapes are harvested in late September. After about 120 days, the collected berries are dried naturally in the basement, which is located at an altitude of 400 meters above sea level. This is followed by crushing and “cold” ten-day maceration. Thereafter, the wort is fermented at low temperatures in small stainless steel tanks for 20 days. Winemaking also involves malolactic fermentation in barrels with the mixing of natural sediment. Aged for a further 36 months in oak barrels and followed by 8 months in the bottle
Color: Dark garnet
Nose: Rich, beautiful aroma with notes of ripe red fruits and spices. The special charm of the flowers gives the seductive notes of berry jam and nuances of dark chocolate and tobacco in the background shades of oak
Palate: Concentrated, intense, generous flavour over a velvety texture with notes of juicy fruit, almond, cherry jam, spices and tobacco
About the Winery:
In one of the most suggestive corners of the High Valpolicella Classica, on the top of a soft hill, the NOVAIA Estate Winery, located in the large 15th-century manor house, dominates the Marano Valley and the plain that separates it from the ancient Roman city of Verona.
In the Marano Valley, a particularly suited place to the cultivation of vines, from the 19th century to the present the Vaona Family cultivates their lands and passes the ancient winemaking tradition of fine Classic wines: today the Valpolicella, Ripasso, Recioto and Amarone.
The Marano Valley, situated in the heart of the High Valpolicella Classica, has geo-morphological, soil, water and climatic characteristics such that it is the ideal place for vine cultivation and for the subsequent grape drying process.
The mild climate, the strong temperature range between day and night and the almost total fog absence during the year, make this area an interesting ecological niche. This territory is suitable for yielding rich in aromas, sapid, full-bodied wines with great quality and longevity
The estate has a surface of 10 hectares, 7 of which with vineyards and 3 with olive groves. The vineyards are hilly, at an altitude between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, with south/south-east exposure.
The soils are marly-calcareous, interspersed with basaltic and tufaceous layers, with low fertility, particularly suitable for the cultivation of important red-berried vines: Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and the ancient native varieties Oseleta, Turchetta and Molinara.
Novaia is Organically Certified: in the estate and in the cellar the management is eco-friendly, organic and eco-sustainable, a healthy habitat rich in biodiversity represents a fundamental heritage for the Novaia lands and wines. The wines are healthy with authentic, elegant and structured aromas, with a great identity and a deep bond with the territory.
The Vaona Family follows and personally takes care of the entire production chain: from the cultivation of the vine to the manual selection and harvesting of the grapes, to the drying in the fruit cellar, to winemaking, to the refinement of wines and wood reserves.
